THE CONSEQUENCES ARE REAL

39%

39% of historically consistent on-duty firefighter fatalities in 2024 were sudden cardiac deaths.¹

100

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation estimates that at least 100 firefighters die by suicide each year.²

These statistics describe devastating outcomes.

Four Alarm works further upstream, helping firefighters and leaders recognize strain, communicate sooner, and build practical ways to support one another before strain becomes a crisis.

This isn't a corporate HR wellness seminar. No trust falls. No mandatory journaling. Nobody's getting put in a circle to process their emotions.

Your crews have sat through programs built for someone else. This wasn't.

WHAT THIS ISN’T

OPERATIONAL READINESS MUST INCLUDE THE PEOPLE DOING THE JOB

The fire service prepares people to enter dangerous environments, make difficult decisions, and perform under pressure. Yet much of firefighter wellness still begins after strain has become visible—after sleep, relationships, coping, performance or mental health have already begun to deteriorate.

Peer support, EAPs, chaplaincy, evaluation and clinical care are essential. Four Alarm Wellness does not replace them. It works further upstream.

We begin with a reality the fire service already understands:

The calls will come, sleep will be interrupted, suffering will be witnessed, and responsibility will accumulate. If the weight is predictable, preparation for carrying it should be part of readiness from the beginning and reinforced throughout the career.

FIRE DEPARTMENTS INVEST THOUSANDS OF HOURS PREPARING PEOPLE TO PERFORM UNDER PRESSURE.

Four Alarm Wellness™ addresses another readiness question: How do we intentionally prepare firefighters for the cumulative physical, mental, relational, and identity demands of an entire career?

SWINGING IT BACK TO CENTER

Fire culture spent decades telling people to check it at the door. That caused real damage. The correction went too far the other way — and that's caused a different kind of damage: crews retreating to their phones instead of each other, standards eroding, leaders who've stopped leading because they're afraid of the conversation.

Four Alarm doesn't push further in either direction. It swings the pendulum back to center — the accountability and standards fire culture built at its best, with an actual system for carrying what the job costs.

THE FOUR ALARM FRAMEWORK

READINESS IS WHOLE PERSON READINESS

These are not four separate programs. They are four interconnected areas every firefighter brings to every shift, every call, every crew and every stage of a career. Strain in one area rarely stays there. Strength built in one area can support the others.

PHYSICAL READINESS

Can I perform when someone else's life depends on me?

Capacity, recovery, sleep, health habits, and the ability to perform safely over time.

MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL READINESS

Can I think clearly and stay composed under pressure?

Awareness, regulation, processing difficult experiences, and responding before strain becomes overwhelming.

SOCIAL CONNECTION

Does my crew trust me, and do I trust them?

Trust, communication, healthy relationships, crew cohesion and the willingness to give and receive support.

PURPOSE AND IDENTITY

Who am I beyond today's call?

A grounded sense of meaning, values and identity that is larger than a rank, role or difficult call.

Your department already has peer support, EAP, chaplaincy. Four Alarm doesn't replace any of that — it's the on-ramp.

We build the crew culture that makes people actually use the resources you've already got, instead of letting the phone number sit on a bulletin board nobody calls.

5 CAPABILITIES REINFORCED THROUGHOUT EVERY PILLAR:

LEADERSHIP • COMMUNICATION • TEAMWORK
ACCOUNTABILITY • RESILIENCE

THE FOUR ALARM LANGUAGE

Recognize Strain Earlier and Respond Before Crisis

Four Alarm gives crews a simple, nonclinical language for recognizing and talking about changing levels of strain. The goal is to notice changes sooner, make check-ins more natural, and create more opportunities to respond while choices and support are still available.

AWARENESS

→

STRAIN

→

INTERVENTION

CRITICAL

→

When firefighters can name strain without shame, and leaders know how to open a door without prying it open, asking for help becomes a sign of readiness and responsibility rather than failure.

Build Leadership Early and Reinforce It Often

Leadership is not limited to rank. It is expressed in what people notice, model, reinforce and make possible for one another every day. Four Alarm helps firefighters begin practicing those behaviors early, then strengthens them as individuals move into mentoring, officer and command roles.

This is not a one-time wellness conversation. It is an evidence-informed, repeatable leadership and team-building practice that becomes more useful when it is introduced early, used consistently and revisited throughout a career.

Practical Skills Crews Can Use on the Next Shift

FIRE SERVICE EXPERIENCE FROM THE APPARATUS FLOOR TO COMMAND

Four Alarm Wellness is taught by experienced fire-service professionals.

They bring complementary backgrounds in crew leadership, emergency medicine and response, command, disaster response, management, instruction, and mentoring. The team understands both the immediate demands of the job and what those demands cost over a career.

Karen Minchow, PA-C

Retired Fire Captain | Founder, Four Alarm Wellness™ | Physician Assistant | FEMA Medical Specialist and National Disaster Medicine Instructor

Karen served 25.5 years in the fire service as a firefighter, paramedic and Fire Captain, holding the rank of Captain for her final 10 years. She helped develop and teach Unified Fire Authority's inaugural paramedic program and has been a licensed Physician Assistant since 2017. She continues to serve with Utah Task Force 1 as a FEMA Medical Specialist and a FEMA National Disaster Medicine Instructor. Karen founded Four Alarm to close the gap between preparing people to manage the call and preparing them for what those calls can cost across a career.

Bryan Case

Former Special Operations Division Chief | FEMA Disaster Response Program Manager | Fire Service Instructor

Bryan brings nearly 30 years of combined fire-department and emergency-response experience. His command background strengthens Four Alarm's leadership development, officer mentoring and leadership-breakout content. He helps translate the framework from individual awareness into consistent leadership behavior that strengthens communication, accountability, trust and crew culture—without forcing disclosure or turning officers into clinicians.

Bart Vawdrey

Former Deputy Chief of Operations | Utah Task Force 1 Safety Officer | FEMA International Instructor

Bart brings more than 3 decades of fire-service experience, including service as a firefighter, engineer, Station Captain, Battalion Chief and Deputy Chief of Operations. A longtime Utah Task Force 1 member and current safety officer, he has responded to major disasters and taught rescue internationally. Bart contributes practical expertise in operational leadership, risk, team coordination and the long-term demands of a fire-service career.

Prepare People to Carry the Weight Together

Stronger firefighters build stronger crews. Stronger crews develop better-prepared leaders. And leaders who model awareness, accountability, and connection help create healthier, more sustainable careers.
